When it comes to petitions, they are probably the most effective form of nonviolent protesting. A beneficial part of petitions is that it is not costly or expensive. All you need is a paper, a pen, and a computer printer is optional for you. If you are wanting to protest or suggest an item in the cafeteria or even a rule that you are having to follow at school, a petition is a way, to show those in authority, that you are not the only one who cares about the issue at hand.
In the beginning when you are thinking all of the information through, there are 3 important aspects that you will need to cover. You will need to figure out if this issue is feasible, do you think that there will be other individuals who will want to sign it, and you will need to think about if this petition and this process can get you suspended or expelled from school before taking any type of action. After you have worked out all of these details, you can then begin to write the petition. It is better if you get on the computer and type it up because it looks more professional, as well as making it easier to read. Make sure to write the word "PETITION" in a very large font.
After typing this part of it, begin by writing what the petition is for and what you are wanting to see change, and then when you have finished make sure to physically sign the petition and do not just type your name in. Before printing it out, be sure that the body of information for your petition, the exact issue that you are wanting to see change, why you are wanting it to change, some sort of medical, scientific, or any other kind of proof that explains the issue, and include a list of pros and cons. It is important to just make sure that you include all of the proper information. You will need to make sure that there is a signing section included in the petition, and then you can print it out.
Begin by taking it to your friends first, this way you will know that you will definitely receive signatures from the beginning, and then branch off into other individuals within your school. Take the petition to teachers as well, this way they can read through it and see that you are being professional about the issue, and make sure to do this when you have extra time and not in the middle of class. Once you have received all of the signatures you need, you will then need to bring it to the office of your school, so that the administrative officials and the principal will be able to see that there are many individuals within your school who are wanting to handle and deal with the situation at hand.
In conclusion, it is prudent to be sure and handle the entire process of the petition in a professional and in the right ways. So, it is important to always be nice, make sure that you do not make any long speeches, make sure to use a pen so that the signatures are not easy to be removed, do not be rebellious during this process because there is a difference between a simple protest and a rebellion, and petitions do not always work, however, do not get discouraged because at least you tried and took a stand.
